John Bunn was born June 15, 1859,  in Warwickshire, England, to John and Elizabeth (Ratlidge) Bunn. He was their first child.

When he was about 10 years old, his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Nebraska.

John married Amanda Prince and they had four children: Minnie, John, Jane, and William. John and Amanda divorced before 1894.

On October 29, 1894, John married Lula Loretta Allen in Springview, Keya Paha County, Nebraska. They had eight children: Alice, Joseph, Verona, Rosa, Eunice, Agnes, Douglas, and Baby Bunn. Lula died while pregnant with their eighth child after falling from a wagon and developing pneumonia. She and the baby both perished in 1907.

In 1909, John placed an advertisement seeking a housekeeper to help with the children and Myrtle Corbin responded to plea. John and Myrtle were married late in that year. They had three children: Marjorie, Levi, and Geneva.

John died on October 20, 1932, in Johnstown, Brown County, Nebraska, at the age of 73. He is buried there in the East Woodlawn Cemetery.
