David Hamar was born in Kentucky on September 22, 1799. His parents were James and Mary Ann (Helm) Hamar. He was the second of eight children.
David married Juliet Points on September 2, 1820, in Campbell County, Kentucky. They moved to Indiana after they were married, and they had five children: James, Malinda, Oliver, Sarah, and Charles. Juliet died when their youngest child was about one-year-old in 1836, in Delaware County, Indiana.
On March 21, 1839, in Delaware County, Indiana, David married Susannah Kelly Blackford. She helped him to raise his five children as well as having four additional children: Mary Ann, Lavina, David, and William. Sarah died when William was about 18-months old in September of 1849, in Delaware County, Indiana.
David married Hetty Bowen on July 13, 1850, in Marion County, Indiana. She passed away before 1857, while they were living in Kentucky.
He married his fourth wife, Sarah P. Holloway, on December 9, 1857, in Wells County, Indiana. It was her second marriage. They met while David's son Charles was courting Sarah's daughter Sarah Emily. Charles and Sarah Emily were married six months after David and Sarah.
David died in Everton, Fayette, Indiana, on March 8, 1867. He is buried there in the Mount Zion Church Cemetery.
